Initiated by her observations of shadows in the earth, the artist spent many months perfecting a technique to express objects in two dimensions onto canvas. Rather the subject is transformed into a re-creation of itself and the canvas transforms into the medium for it's personal interpretation by painting, particularly when the subjects are live or perishable objects for example, like humans or fruit. The transient nature of her painterly style is obvious and the only thing that remains in Alexa Meade's work is the photographic image. Techniques of photography and painting are closely coordinated and result in a flat, two-dimensional area that is trompe l'oeil. Only certain areas of the photo such as the hair, or eyes, display the 3D dimension. Meade can sometimes incorporate her painting into the surrounding three-dimensional environment that allows them to interact within the context of their own. This is a way of breaking down the barriers between painting, photography, performances and installations.
